March brings beauty, basketball and big openings

Pansies add vibrancy Downtown
Vibrant color will enhance Downtown’s landscape this March. More than 10,000 orange, royal blue and white annuals, including pansies, will be planted in nearly 200 planters throughout Downtown in time to welcome thousands of visitors.  In addition, hundreds of Downtown businesses plant pansies to enhance their properties and the entire Downtown neighborhood.  The floral assortment will include pansies, diascia, snapdragons, allysum, nemesia and violas.  Planting begins March 16.  For more information, call 237.2211.

37 Basketball games in 35 days!
Downtown has a full roster of sporting events during the month of March!  The month tips off with the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament March 4 – 7 and the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament March 11 – 14 at Conseco Fieldhouse.  The IHSAA Boys State Basketball Finals take place March 27 at Conseco Fieldhouse.  Check out all the fun activities for Big Ten and NCAA basketball fans during the events at www.indianasportscorp.com.  The Indiana Pacers have six home games throughout March as well. Get into the action and go for a run with the 500 Festival Mini Marathon Training Series presented by OrthoIndy – 10K March 6 and the Big Ten Hoops Day 5k at Conseco Fieldhouse March 14.  Also, the American Cheer and Dance competition will be held at the Indianapolis Convention Center March 21.

Sounds of the Circle City
March 13 the smooth voice of Norah Jones comes to town at the Murat Centre.  Mingle at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Stella Artois Happy Hour at the Symphony to see how the music of Coldplay and Beethoven mix to create a harmonious performance March 18.  Jay-Z with Young Jeezy & Trey Songz will be at Conseco Fieldhouse March 20.

St.Patrick’s Day on tap Downtown
St. Patrick’s Day takes over Downtown March 13 - 17.  March 17 is the Greening of the Canal presented by the Hoosier Lottery with Mayor Ballard at 6:30 a.m. as well as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade presented by Cathedral High School.  If you’re looking for more Irish adventures, take part in the IAC Shamrock Run/Walk March 13 starting at Monument Circle.  Keep the Irish spirit alive throughout the entire month by attending Celtic Woman at the Murat Centre March 27.

March is Women’s History Month
Celebrate Women’s History Month by visiting the Girls Inc. Living Women’s History Exhibit on display at Central Library throughout March.  The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art praises the untamed spirit of pioneering women across time who remind us that well-behaved women seldom make history with March 21 & 22 performances of Women Gone Wild by the Indianapolis Women’s Chorus.  The Eiteljorg Museum will also host its fourth annual Women in Art Market March 27.  The exhibit celebrates creativity from a woman’s perspective and is free with general admission.

Dust off your green thumb!
Get an early taste of spring at one of several nature–inspired events going on Downtown during the month of March.  Learn more about the newest selections in annuals, perennials, trees and more at the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s lecture, The Greatest Most Fantastical New Plants Ever March 4.  Discover the world above, the world below and the world we live in at Earth and Sky Day at Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians March 6.  Break out of your winter trance with the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s talented horticultural staff and their “Horticopia” discussion March 14.  Visit the Indiana State Museum’s Going Green Festival March 19 & 20 to learn what it means to “go green” as a Hoosier.  The Basic Pruning class at the Indianapolis Museum of Art March 27 was created to put the home gardener at ease by sharing basic guidelines and hands-on techniques to pruning.

There’s no place like home
March brings a variety of great performances to Downtown stages!  Dance Kaleidoscope explores the trials of the heart with Love is… at the Indiana Repertory Theatre March 4-7.  Broadway in Indianapolis presents 101 Dalmations March 9 – 14 at Clowes Memorial Hall.  Mistaken identity meets midlife crisis in the goofy comedy Becky’s New Car at the Indiana Repertory Theatre March 24 – April 11.  Follow the yellow brick road to Hilbert Circle Theatre to see The Wizard of Oz March 26-28.

Indiana Historical Society’s Indiana Experience opening!
Interactive and high-technology experiences offer visitors of the new Indiana Experience at the Eugene and Mary Glick Indiana History Center a new way to live and learn about Hoosier history.  The Grand Opening is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 20 and will continue through Sunday, March 21.  Check out new “You Are There” experiences, Destination Indiana, the hands-on History Lab and more.  For more information visit www.indianahistory.org.
